In short: Naija Eval is a page of research results. It has no accounts, no forms, no cookies, no ads and no analytics, and it loads nothing from other companies: fonts and code come from our own domain, and the live status badges in the footer come from Down in Nigeria, another Extrafemi Labs service. Our host, Cloudflare, sees your IP address to deliver the page and protect it from attacks. If you switch to dark or light mode, that choice is saved in your own browser and never sent to us.
1. Who is responsible for your data
The data controller is Extrafemi Labs, which publishes Naija Eval as part of Extrafemi Research. For any privacy question, or to use your rights, use the Extrafemi Labs contact form and choose "Privacy or data request". That form is run by our Naija Transcribe service and is covered by its privacy notice.
2. What is processed, why, and on what legal basis
| Data | Who handles it | Why | Legal basis | How long |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your IP address and basic request details (page asked for, time, browser type) | Cloudflare, our host | To deliver the page and protect it from abuse and attacks | Legitimate interests in running a secure website (NDPA s.25(1)(f); GDPR art. 6(1)(f)) | Short-lived, under Cloudflare's policy. We do not keep server logs for this site. Cloudflare gives us only total visit counts, with no IP addresses. |
| Your IP address and browser details when the footer's status badges load | Down in Nigeria (down.extrafemi.com), run by Extrafemi Labs on Cloudflare | To draw the live status badges for this site and N-ATLaS | Legitimate interests in showing an independent, live status (NDPA s.25(1)(f); GDPR art. 6(1)(f)) | Under Down in Nigeria's privacy notice. The badges are plain images: they set no cookies and run no code. |
| Your light or dark mode choice | Your browser only (localStorage key ne-theme) | To remember a setting you chose | Strictly necessary for a feature you asked for, so no consent is needed (ePrivacy Directive art. 5(3); UK PECR reg. 6(4)) | Until you clear your browser's site data. It never leaves your device. |
We do not make automated decisions about you and we do not profile you.
3. What we never do
- No cookies of any kind, so there is no cookie banner.
- No analytics, tracking pixels, fingerprinting or session recording.
- No advertising, and we never sell or share personal data.
- No third-party fonts, scripts or embeds. Everything the page needs is served from naija-eval.extrafemi.com, apart from the status badge images, which come from our own Down in Nigeria service.
- No sign-up, comments or forms on this site.
4. The research data on this page
The scores come from public research datasets: Google's FLEURS (read speech) and FLORES (sentences aligned across languages), both CC BY-SA 4.0. The page shows FLORES sentences as text, with each model's translation of them. These are general news and reference sentences, not information about you. FLEURS audio was used only to work out the speech scores. No voice recordings are published or redistributed here.
5. Transfers outside Nigeria, the EU and the UK
Cloudflare, Inc. is based in the United States and runs a global network, so request data may be handled outside your country. Cloudflare is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and its UK extension, and offers Standard Contractual Clauses. Those safeguards also serve as the appropriate protection required for transfers out of Nigeria under sections 41 to 43 of the NDPA.
6. Your rights
Under the NDPA (sections 34 to 38) and the GDPR (articles 15 to 22) you can ask to be told what we hold about you, get a copy, have it corrected or deleted, restrict or object to its use, receive it in a portable form, and not be subject to decisions made only by automated means. Because we keep no logs and no accounts for this site, we will usually hold nothing that identifies you, and we will tell you so. We reply within one month. Using your rights is free.
7. Complaints
Please contact us first so we can try to put it right. You can also complain to a regulator:
- In Nigeria: the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.
- In the UK: the Information Commissioner's Office.
- In the EU: the data protection authority of the country where you live or work.
8. Children
Naija Eval is written for adults. It collects nothing from anyone, including children.
9. Security
The site is served only over HTTPS, with a strict content security policy that stops the page from loading or sending anything to other websites, except the status badge images from down.extrafemi.com.
10. Changes
If we change how Naija Eval handles data, we will update this notice and the date at the top before the change takes effect.
